I am very excited about this project! There are many things I'd love to try, master and/or experiment with. The details for my 20% Project are in the very beginning stages and still shaping, but here are three potential ideas that I have for the project. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! #1: Teaching myself how to sew Sewing has so many layers. Sewing by hand, home decor sewing, sewing for children, fashion/garment sewing, quilting, crafts, upcycling, and a lot of other sewing areas I can’t even begin to recall. All that to say, sewing is a useful skill that is worth learning. I think there are so many reasons people come to a screeching halt when it comes to sewing. There are many aspects of sewing that could become frustrating and it takes some mental power to pursue and work through those headache times. I've always seen some great clothes but cannot believe the pricetag. I've frequently said, "If I knew how to sew, I could easily make that for less". But one little problem there, I don't know how to sew! I think it would be a useful skill in life to know how to fix things, create things and use my imagination in a multitude of ways. I believe sewing will increase my ability to draw on the creativity that lies within me and lately, I feel like I'm lacking in the creativity department. #2: Learning how to make and perfect Creme Brulee My mom just loves creme brulee. I always end up buying it from a restaurant for her for all her special days (birthday, Mother's day, just because, etc.) and I always think, "I could make this!" I'd love to be able to make my mom her favorite dessert verse having to go buy it every time. There's so much meaning to something when it comes from the heart and is homemade. #3: Reteach myself Piano I never appreciated the piano lessons I took as a child or the beauty of knowing how to play the piano. I've been wanting to relearn the piano for so long and just haven't done it. I believe this project would give me a kickstart to starting (or restarting) something I've wanted to do for so long. | |

I think that these are all great ideas! It's so sweet how you want to learn to make your mom's favorite dessert. I think that my favorite of your ideas is learning to sew. Sewing is a skill that is versatile and can be used for a number of things, and I think it would be easiest to practice sewing if we are ever given class time for the project. Plus, making your own clothes would be such a money saver!

Laura, teaching yourself how to sew would be a great project and very practical. I learned when I was a kid and still use those same skills today. My Mom had an old Singer pedal crank sewing machine which I learned on, as well as how to sew up by hand my own ripped clothes and missing buttons Mom wanted the "boys" to be self-sufficient, able to take care of themselves in the world.

Hey Laura! I think it would be fun to learn how to sew an article of clothing. After you are done, I'll place an order for a dress or something :)
